John Broady was an American patriot. He marched with the Overmountain Men and fought in the battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780, in the upcountry of South Carolina. In this brief, fierce, and decisive engagement, John Broady was among the American soldiers who defeated the Loyalist Militia, thereby setting in motion a series of events leading to the American victory at Yorktown in October 1781 and securing American independence.
John Broady was brought to this place when he was very young. As an adult, he was firmly rooted in Southwest Virginia. His hundreds of descendants have made significant contributions to this place, particularly in Smyth and Washington counties, serving their communities, their neighbors, their schools and churches. John Broady’s descendants have settled across the United States to take up many kinds of work, to serve in many kinds of ways. Some have served their country in the armed forces, just as John himself had done.
This is part of John Broady’s story.
